There were plenty of little banh mi stalls and stands along the length of Marrickville Road (we stayed at Em's place nearby) and so we ate a lot of these while in Sydney. Preserved pork products and crunchy veggies served in a crusty baguette - you can't really go wrong, can you? The best ones came from a little hole-in-the-wall on the corner of Marrickville and Illawara Roads, and had juicy, giant meatballs in them. Why aren't there more banh mi places in London, dammit?

The Birdman of Circular Quay
Manbacon and I spent the first two weeks of February in Australia, catching up with family and friends and generally behaving rather badly. More photos and words will follow shortly, but first, I want to show you all one of the best things I saw in Sydney - The Birdman of Circular Quay!

Stall Stuff
Change is afoot at the Tea Rooms stall...Former stall partner Rory is now off to greener (and much better paying pastures), and I have partnered up with a fishy little purveyor of Toot. Come and check out the new layout (in the same old space) if you're in town.
Old ladies, horses with broken legs and naked men with half an arm -we've got them all! |
A naughty alphabet - avert your eyes, children! |
We also have an occasional inhouse tarot reader, who comes with a set of cards she designed herself. What clever people!

Old Cats
Some fine felines on glass negatives that I bought at Battersea boot about six months ago. They date from around the turn of the (last) century to the 1930s. Irrefutable proof that photography and cat pictures go hand-in-hand, even back then. My favourite one at the moment is that lovely almost all-black fellow in the last shot, with that triangle of white on his chest. Which one's your favourite?
